Cities are on the frontline of the global climate emergency. If we fail to act now, we face even more devastating consequences – extreme high temperatures, flooding of oceans and rivers, blackouts, droughts, food shortages and frequent global pandemics.
The science is clear that there is still time for us to act, and cities, citizens, businesses, and national governments working hand in hand can make a difference.
As cities and local governments recover from COVID-19, implementing green climate solutions can help accelerate economic recovery leading to a more healthy, equitable, and sustainable future.
Many mayors and city leaders are already leading the way by putting in place measures to rapidly decrease emissions and halve them (or better) by 2030. We’re inviting every city, town and community on earth to join us on this journey:
Getting involved as a mayor or city official
Mayors of the world’s cities have been some of the strongest champions of the Paris Agreement and have been committed to delivering on its highest ambition – to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C.
In addition to continuing the work you are already doing in your city, here’s how your city or local government can join Countdown and help lead a worldwide movement to accelerate solutions to address the climate crisis.

Accelerate climate action in your city and community
There is an incredible amount of expertise available to cities, towns and communities that are striving to deliver on the Paris Agreement. Here’s where to start:
Many towns and cities are working together through local and international organizations to share best practices and accelerate climate action. Consider becoming more active with one of these leading organizations:
Race To Zero is a global campaign to mobilize leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth.
The objective is to build momentum around the shift to a decarbonized economy ahead of COP26, where governments must strengthen their contributions to the Paris Agreement. Joining the Race will send governments a resounding message that business, cities, regions and investors are united in meeting the Paris goals and building a more inclusive and resilient economy.
If your city is ready to join the Race, find out how.
If your town or city hasn’t yet made any commitments to climate action, then committing to The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy is a great place to start.
If your town or city is already taking action, check out these resources that can help you increase the scale of your work already underway.

Getting involved as a resident or community member
Whether you live in a large city or a small community, your voice and your choices matter. In addition to making changes in your daily life to reduce your personal carbon footprint, you also have an important role to play in making sure your city, town or community is taking the action needed to tackle the climate crisis. In addition, your voice is even louder and more powerful when combined with other citizens.
